Brand Strategy

Finding a psychological space in a crowded tequila market

Premium spirits categories are remarkably predictable. Almost every brand competes on the same handful of ideas: exclusivity, craftsmanship, status and aspiration.

Our task was to develop the strategic thinking behind a major summer campaign for a rapidly growing premium tequila brand. Rather than asking what competitors were saying, we asked a different question: what fundamental human motive were they all competing for?

The insight

Using Fundamental Motives Theory from evolutionary psychology, we mapped the category against the deeper social motivations driving consumer behaviour.

Almost every premium tequila brand was competing for one motive: status. They sold prestige, exclusivity and social signalling.

That revealed an opportunity. Instead of helping people look superior, the brand could stand for something equally powerful: connection. Bringing people together. Sharing discoveries. Creating moments that mattered.

Strategic Platform

Quality is
meant to be shared.

The result

The strategy gave the creative team a distinctive territory that competitors couldn't easily copy. Rather than adding another luxury story to an already crowded category, it repositioned this premium tequila brand around generosity, community and shared experience without sacrificing premium credentials.

The most valuable positioning is the one no one else has noticed.
